Scattered about the valley are nearly twenty towns and villages that have preserved the rich ethnic traditions of their past more so than any other region of the country. The main towns are Chivay, Cabanaconde. Huambo. Maca, Achoma, Yunque, Lari, and Coporaque. The people living there are deeply religious and whose Catholic faith is interspersed with Pre-Hispanic beliefs. Each town has its own church, a storehouse of Hispanic heritage and expression of architectural sobriety and purity based on the use of the volcanic stone, sillar.
