Rock formations

Monoliths, or stone forests, are also common in the area around the Colca Canyon. These bizarre shapes stand out from the rest of the landscape, and they are likely the result of volcanic eruptions or possibly fractures or faults that have undergone erosion. It is also common to see stone walls and columns throughout the canyon that remain fixed in their original vertical and horizontal cooling positions but have been, and still are being, eroded by winds and rains. There are also formations like natural cavities (grottos and caves), and in some of the grottos we can see the leftovers of past civilizations, human remains, metal, ceramic, and bone artifacts, as well as petroglyphs.
