Another particular aspect about the Colca Valley is its towns scattered on both sides of the canyon. Most of these were founded in 1570, when the Spanish occupied these lands and divided the indigenous people into communities and towns, “blessing” each one with its own church. Visiting these small towns and discovering a living tradition in them reflected in the outfits of the women and in their festivals, marking the times for planting and harvesting, is quite an interesting experience. Everything is mixed together with intense Catholic passion that is the legacy of the Spanish colony.
