Churches in the Colca Valley
We will cross to the right side of the valley to visit the town of Lari and its Church of the Immaculate Conception, which is considered the Cathedral of the Valley. Its cupola is compared to those found in the Santa Catalina Convent and the Church of the Company of Jesus, both in Arequipa and which are said to be sturdily built. Farther ahead is the town of Ichupampa and the Church of Saint John the Baptist; it is the only church in the valley that has preserved its complete collection of Cusco School paintings. Next on the agenda is Coporaque and the Church of Saint James the Apostle, an excellent example of the religious Renaissance of the Viceroyalty of Peru.
We will then cross over to the left side of the valley to visit Chivay (capital of the Caylloma Province) and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. Inside is an ancient Renaissance retable decorated with columns and cherubim. It is a genuinely remarkable attraction, and a good reason to stop by this church.
We end the tour with a visit to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Yanque, site where the Mercedarian order was established in the 16th century.
